A ‘double-eyed’ approach to a just energy transition in underprivileged neighbourhoods
An article was recently published that succinctly explains how the Just Prepare project aims to contribute to the energy transition in neighbourhoods with a dilapidated housing stock, limited economic vitality and a significant need for renovation. Yet there is often considerable resistance to renovation projects in these neighbourhoods. As a result, opportunities to give the energy transition a boost are being missed.

Looking Back at Learning Lab 7: From Theory to Action in the Local Energy Transition
On February 11, researchers and industry partners gathered at the Urban Energy Institute at TU Delft for the seventh Just Prepare Learning Lab. Led by chairperson Sietske Veenman, the session focused on the question of how we can shape the local energy transition in a way that is both effective and equitable. Following introductions by Professor Henk Visscher and researcher Thaleia Konstantinou, the approximately 35 attendees actively engaged with the interim research findings.
Results of the Summer Comfort Survey
During the summer and winter of 2023/2024, we asked residents how they stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Through photography, writing, drawings, and conversations, residents shared their experiences and knowledge about staying cool and warm in their homes. We spoke with families and single people, older adults and young people, people born in the Netherlands and people born elsewhere. Most of the people we spoke with were renters.
Diverse profiles and solutions for home renovations
On Tuesday, March 3, Iris Loche, a postdoc at Just Prepare at Eindhoven University of Technology, presented the results of her research on energy sufficiency in residential renovations to a multidisciplinary audience of researchers. The researchers gathered to discuss the theme “Energy Transition in the Built Environment,” which is coordinated by Roel Loonen and Lenneke Kuijer as part of the Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES).

Towards fair and sustainable practices
Onlangs kwam het rapport “Eerlijk verduurzamen” van de Raad voor de leefomgeving en infrastructuur uit. De Raad heeft onderzocht hoe het zit met de lusten en lasten van verduurzaming en hoe burgers daarnaar kijken. De belangrijkste conclusie is dat veel mensen het beleid ten aanzien van verduurzaming oneerlijk vinden, en dat dat een belangrijke reden is dat de verduurzaming van Nederland niet zo voorspoedig gaat als gewenst om de duurzaamheidsdoelen te halen die landelijk zijn gesteld. De Rli stelt dat verduurzaming nodig heeft dat iedereen die dat kan mee moet doen en zich dus moet inspannen om mee te helpen de duurzaamheidsdoelen te halen, maar dat dit onvoldoende gebeurt. Daarnaast constateert de Raad dat daardoor het draagvlak voor beleid kleiner wordt, op het gevaar af dat het onmogelijk wordt om als samenleving nog succesvol te verduurzamen.
From home to neighbourhood: residents share solutions for comfort and sustainability in Nijmegen and Rotterdam
Op 12 en 14 november organiseerden Piet de Koning en Simone van Wieringen twee bewonersworkshops in Nijmegen Dukenburg en Bospolder Tussendijken in Rotterdam. Het uitgangspunt was dat bewoners hun huis en buurt vaak ontzettend goed kennen: we waren daarom nieuwsgierig naar wat voor hen werkt,, welke vragen spelen en welke oplossingen zij in de loop der tijd voor zichzelf hebben gevonden. In deze workshops, waarin ook enkele lokale professionals deelnamen, leerden we vooral van elkaar als bewoners en buren.

Op 11 november vond in de Rotterdamse Doelen de première van de documentaire over de aardgasvrije transitie in Bospolder Tussendijken (BotU) plaats. De zaal zat vol bewoners, studenten, vertegenwoordigers van gemeenten, sociale organisaties en onderzoekers. Deze opkomst laat zien dat er veel betrokkenheid is bij de vraag: Wat vraagt een sociale energietransitie van een wijk en van professionals?
